2002 - In his last fight on February 23, 2002, Bones met Paulie Ayala in the ring once again for a rematch of their August 4th, 2001 fight. Adams put up a strong fight throughout all twelve rounds, but in the end Ayala was ahead on all scorecards and won by unanimous decision.
2001 - In his fight on August 4th, Bones fought an all out war against Paulie Ayala. The bout resulted in a controversial split decision for Ayala, with many believing the Adams was ahead on the scorecards throughout that bout. A rematch was confirmed for early 2002.
2ND WBA SB DEFENSE - in his fight on 3-23-01 in Owensboro, KY, he won a 12 round unanimous decision against Ivan Alvarez (18-5): Alvarez was a late replacement, but was well-prepared and gave a strong effort; Clarence, however, was up to the challenge - he outworked Alvarez, scored a knockdown in the 4th round, and cut him over the left eye in the 10th; scored 116-111, 115-112, 115-112; there was a lot of additional pressure on Clarence outside the ring, as well - he was involved in the promotion of the fight for five weeks, and said, "This is all in my hands and if it's not packed, I'm never going to hear the end of it. I wanted to bring something back to this community. I've always fought out of Kentucky. I've always supported Kentucky. That means a lot to me."…the fact that his opponents played musical chairs during the week preceding the fight didn't help, either - originally scheduled WBA #1-ranked Yober Ortega was replaced by WBA #2 Antonio Cermeno, who was replaced by WBA #3 Jose Cheo Rojas, then Cermeno again, then Alvarez only a few days before the fight…
2000 - 1ST WBA SB DEFENSE - on 8-5-00 in Madison, WI, he TKO'd Andres Fernandez (16-4) it was a very bloody battle; Fernandez was cut under the left eye in the 2nd round by a clash of heads, and Clarence was cut over the right eye in the 4th; Fernandez stunned Clarence in the 5th round, but was cut again under the left eye by a punch; Fernandez was bloodied even more by another clash of heads in the 6th, and the referee stopped the fight on the cuts at 2:23 of the 6th round; after the fight, Clarence said, "My hand may be broken again. Throwing that right hand, the overhand right - my favourite punch - my hand went. That's when I hurt it again."…
WON WBA SB TITLE - on 3-4-00 in Las Vegas, NV, he won a 12 round unanimous decision against defending champion Nestor Garza (38-1) Clarence gave a sensational performance and dominated the fight; he scored one knockdown in the 1st round and another in the 5th, and Garza was cut by an accidental clash of heads in the 3rd; scored 118-108, 118-108, 116-110…after the fight, Clarence said, "This is what I've been working for all my life, since I was five years old'"…the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, "Adams didn't enter Saturday's fight against champion Nestor Garza with a reputation as a puncher. He may, however, have one now."… 1999 - on 11-26-99 in New Orleans, LA, he won a 10 round unanimous decision against former NABF bantamweight champion and local favorite Aristead Clayton (22-2) Clarence used an effective body attack, outworked Clayton, and won by scores of 99-91, 98-92, 96-94…
1997 - on 11-21-97 in Kansas City, MO, he won a 10 round decision against Mexican veteran Roberto Villareal (21-10-1)... On 8-3-97 in Columbus, OH, he won a 12 round decision against Mike Juarez (21-6-1)... 1995 - on 9-9-95 in Las Vegas he fought to2 round draw against former WBC champion Kevin Kelley (42-1-1) it was a very close fight, and neither fighter took control; Clarence's left eye was swollen nearly shut by the 9th round; scored 116-112 Adams, 114-114, 114-114... On 6-13-95 in Moline, IL,he won a 10 round unanimous decision against Denver veteran Felipe Garcia (16-11-1)
Clarence controlled most of the fight but was rocked in the 7th round; scored 48-42 (using Illinois' five-point must system) on all three scorecards... On 4-7-95 in Rockingham, NH, he fought to a 10 round draw against Edwin Santana (16-0-2) an arm injury hampered Clarence's performance; he built an early lead and many observers thought he deserved to win, but the judges scored 194-192 Adams, 196-194 Santana, 194-194, using New Hampshire's 20-point must system... On 1-6-95 in Los Angeles, CA, he won a 10 round unanimous decision against former Philippine champion Isagani Pumar (21-5-2) it was a hard, competitive fight, scored of 97-93, 97-93, 96-94... On 11-10-93 in Atlantic City, NJ, he lost by TKO against Frank Toledo (18-2), who recently won the IBF featherweight world title: Clarence suffered a dislocated shoulder and could not continue after the 4th round...
1993 - IBF B TITLE CHALLENGE - on 3-27-93 in Evian, France, he challenged defending champion Orlando Canizales (33-1-1) only 18 years old at the time, Clarence fought Canizales on even terms, but suffered a jaw injury; his corner finally threw in the towel at 1:32 of the 11th round; after ten rounds, Canizales led 96-94 on all three scorecards... He debuted at the age of 15 on 4-3-90 and went 26-0-1 in his first 27 fights...
AMATEUR BACKGROUND: 1989 National Junior Olympic amateur champion at 119 pounds…he started boxing at the age of 5 - his father taught Clarence and his older brother Fred to box "for self-defense, really"…his dad also gave him his nickname - "He just said I was 'skin and bones' and it stuck"…by the time he was seven, Clarence had won 36 amateur fights in a row, and the network TV show "That's Incredible" sent its production crew with cameras to interview him at his home…when he turned pro at the age of 15, he was profiled in Sports Illustrated…he reportedly had 179 amateur bouts (168-11) in the junior class...he also won the National Silver Gloves and was on the US Jr. Amateur team...he turned pro before he was old enough to compete in the open class...
